Checklist

  Read as much as possible about adoptions.
  Talk to friends or acquaintances who have adopted.
  Attend orientation sessions.
  Decide what type of adoption most appeals to you, and review its most important points and features.
  Interview several adoption agencies or other intermediaries.
  Clarify and compare adoption fees.
  Estimate all other potential expenses.
  Apply for an adoption.
  Have a home study conducted.
  Begin the search for a child.
  Select a child.
  Review and adjust expense estimates, if necessary.
  Prepare your home for the arrival of your child.
  Seek and apply for adoption loans, if necessary, or for assistance (government, employer, and so on).
  Add your child to your health plan.
  Finalize the adoption.
(In the case of international adoptions, also apply for U.S. citizenship for your child.)
  Get a new Social Security number for your child.
  Get a new birth certificate for your child.
  Update your will, life insurance policy, and other appropriate documents.
