Finding Help

Points to Remember:

  • Medical guidance is available from a variety of sources such as diabetes groups, local medical societies and hospitals, and diabetes clinics.
A person with diabetes is responsible for his or her daily care and a doctor is the best source of information on that care. A doctor in family practice or internal medicine can diagnose and treat diabetes, and may refer the patient to a doctor who specializes in treating diabetes. "Endocrinologists" and "diabetologists" are doctors with advanced training and experience in diabetes treatment. The local chapters of the American Diabetes Association or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation have lists of doctors who specialize in diabetes. Another alternative is to contact a university-based medical center. Those centers may have special diabetes clinics or may be able to suggest diabetes doctors who practice in the community.
